In a thrilling match at the Kensington Oval, Jamaica Kingsmen defeated the Guyana Amazon Warriors to advance to the 2026 Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League ( CPL) final. This win for the Jamaican franchise gives them a shot at claiming the CPL this year, as they return to the competition and face the Antigua & Barbuda Falcons on Sunday.
Powell’s aggressive batting in the final stages led his team to victory and earned them a spot in the final against the Antigua and Barbuda Falcons. Powell ended his innings on 40 off just 17 balls, hitting 2 fours and 4 sixes in a blistering cameo.
His performance earned him the Player of the Match award, which he decided to split with Shimron Hetmyer, whose unbeaten century had set the stage for the successful chase. Hetmyer scored 102 off just 45 balls, recording his second century of the CPL 2026 season.
Powell also recognised the difficulty presented by the Amazon Warriors, who had led the league with 8 wins in 10 games during the regular season. The Warriors reached the finals in each of the previous three CPL tournaments and claimed victory in 2023, establishing them as strong contenders. Even though they held a strong position in the league, the Warriors fell short in the knockout match.
Powell looked back on his strategy during the chase and the tactical changes he implemented to counter the Warriors’ bowling attack. He understood that intent was crucial when batting in a playoff, as mere survival wouldn’t guarantee a win. His aggressive approach enabled him to take advantage of the chances offered by the opposition bowlers.
Talking about the match, in the initial overs, the Warriors batters continued to struggle to find momentum, finishing the Power Play at 37/2. This put them in a similar position to the Guyanese franchise had been in against the Falcons just a day earlier, when they collapsed for 76 all out.
In contrast, things looked quite different here, with Hetmyer delivering a brilliant innings that featured more sixes than fours and an extraordinary display of power hitting. He hit his century off the final ball of the innings, slashing Andre Russell over third man for four after facing only 45 balls.
The rapid pace at which Sadaqat scored gave Carty and Kirk McKenzie the opportunity to settle in and bring the scoring rate under control. It seemed Jamaica was on track for victory, but the momentum shifted when they lost wickets of Carty, Saim Ayub, and Russell, causing some nerves in the final moments.
With Rovman Powell there at the end, they remained composed, and he has once again guided a Jamaican team to the CPL, just as he did in 2022. Sunday’s final promises an exciting showdown between two teams in top form, revisiting their first encounter of the year in the CPL to determine who will claim the 2026 title.
