As part of India’s preparations for the 2027 ICC Men’s ODI World Cup, the Board of Control for Cricket in India is looking into the idea of setting up a four-to six-match ODI series in South Africa. The BCCI and Cricket South Africa have started talking about adding the proposed series to the international schedule.
The Indian Express said that the management of the Indian squad asked the BCCI to set up an ODI series against South Africa, which would be a perfect prelude to the big event that South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia will host.
As of right now, India’s official calendar does not include the scheduled tour. No dates or locations have been confirmed yet, and it would need opening a new window in an already full calendar. Discussions are still in the planning phase.
The 2027 ODI World Cup is tentatively set to take place in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia from October 4 to November 21, 2027. Fourteen teams will compete in the competition, which will have a Super Series round before the group stages and a Super 7 phase prior to the semifinals.
In addition to the ODI schedule, India will play Australia in a five-Test series starting on January 21, 2027. Because of this commitment, the windows for any further bilateral series are further constrained, making it logistically difficult for both boards to find a new time slot for the planned visit of South Africa.
Given the amount of cricket already scheduled across formats in the months preceding the World Cup, the proposed four-to six-match series in South Africa would be a major addition to the schedule if confirmed. In December 2023, KL Rahul guided India to a 2-1 series victory in their most recent ODI series in South Africa. India now has a winning record from their most recent bilateral ODI visit to the nation thanks to the outcome.
Because South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia will co-host the 2027 World Cup, all participating teams should be especially familiar with South African conditions. Finding a feasible slot in the international calendar will determine if India’s proposed series with CSA advances past the planning stage.
