‘We’re Very Lucky to Have Him’: McCullum Backs Pietersen to Shake Up England

Pietersen will be part of England’s squad for most of the series leading up to and including the 2027 World Cup, beginning with the three T20 matches and as many ODIs against Sri Lanka this month. The 46-year- old, who amassed nearly 14,000 runs in all three formats of international cricket from 2004 to 2014, criticised England for inadequate preparation during their white-ball tour of India in 2025, a trip that ended in losses across both ODI and T20I series.

Pietersen’s appointment lasts for 12 months and extends until the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup, set to take place in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. This is his first official role with the England senior team since his international career concluded in 2014. England head coach Brendon McCullum was the key figure in securing the appointment. McCullum explained how he personally contacted Pietersen and took into account the former captain’s own concerns about joining the arrangement.

On BBC Match Special, McCullum said, “I rang Kev [Pietersen] and said, do you want to come and help us challenge for a World Cup? He said, I was just criticising you a lot, not long ago. I said, I don’t care about that. Some of it’s fair and some of it would need some explanation, but I have no problem with that. I think it’s healthy when you create an environment where you’re able to challenge, as long as you’re always trying to think of what’s right for the team and trying to help the team to achieve what you want. There’s no problem having that kind of challenge. The energy he’s brought to the group already has been immense.”

McCullum would not be drawn on whether success in this role could lead to Pietersen working with the Test team, saying reporters would have to ask incoming red-ball coach Stephen Fleming. Fleming replaced McCullum as England Test boss in August but did not oversee the 3-0 sweep of Pakistan, with Marcus Trescothick in interim charge for that resounding victory.

He further added, “I feel very privileged for us to be able to have him as a resource within our dressing room. He was obviously a brilliant cricketer. He viewed the game quite differently. He was a winner and he was a guy who left no stone unturned when it came to his preparation. I think for us, we’re very lucky to have him as part of our support staff.”
