After leaving his longtime franchise Vidarbha, India’s experienced but sidelined fast bowler Umesh Yadav has joined Punjab as a guest player for the upcoming domestic season, aiming to secure consistent playing time across all formats. After being out of the national selection frame for a while, the 38-year- old was looking for a team that could give him regular chances across all formats- a role Punjab was keen to offer to strengthen their bowling lineup.
This move represents a first for the PCA, as Umesh is now the inaugural guest player signed by the association. The experienced bowler has secured a no-objection certificate from the Vidarbha Cricket Association and is set to play for Punjab in the next Ranji Trophy season. Umesh has played 55 Tests, 75 ODIs, and nine T20Is for India. He has also claimed the Ranji Trophy with Vidarbha and contributes significant domestic and international experience to Punjab’s team. PCA president Amarjit Mehta confirmed Umesh’s transfer and underscored the pacer’s qualifications.
Umesh contributes a significant amount of elite-level experience to Punjab’s relatively inexperienced squad, having led India’s Test pace attack for more than ten years. Over an outstanding international career that covered all three formats, he took 170 Test wickets in 57 matches, plus 106 in ODIs and 12 in T20Is. His knack for leading the attack, bowling at high speed, and generating movement with the new ball adds vital depth to Punjab’s red-ball lineup, while also offering their young fast bowlers an essential on-field mentor.
Times of India quotes Mehta saying, “He has proven credentials as a bowler. He has won the Ranji Trophy with Vidarbha and has been a champion bowler for India as well. We have taken the decision keeping our red-ball cricket in focus. Punjab have not won the Ranji Trophy since 1992 and we think Umesh is someone who can deliver us the title. His experience is going to be invaluable to the youngsters in the team. There is so much to learn from someone of Umesh’s stature.”
Umesh’s most recent appearance for India was in the World Test Championship final against Australia at The Oval in June 2023. At 38, the pacer is still in good shape and is anticipated to join Punjab’s Ranji Trophy camp within the next few days. Punjab coach Amit Uniyal supported the decision to include Umesh in the squad and cited his experience of bowling in Indian conditions as the reason.
