In preparation for the forthcoming Big Bash League (BBL) season, the Perth Scorchers have added an aggressive wicketkeeper-batter to their roster. Following adjustments to their overseas contingent, the reigning champions are reshaping their batting options. After a string of outstanding performances in English domestic cricket and his recent debut to international cricket, Aneurin Donald views the deal as a new chapter in his career.
Prior to the 2026–2027 Big Bash League season, England wicketkeeper-batter Aneurin Donald signed a contract with the Perth Scorchers, providing the reigning champions with a potent top-order option as they reorganise their roster. Donald has agreed to a one-year contract that includes full availability, including the finals, after making his T20 international debut last month. Alongside fellow England international Zak Crawley, the 29-year-old is the most recent foreign addition to the Scorchers squad.
Donald’s arrival coincides with Josh Inglis’ unclear future with the Scorchers and Finn Allen’s transfer to the Melbourne Stars. But on a team that already has a number of top-order batting options, the Englishman will have a chance to establish himself. Before resuming his domestic career with Derbyshire, the 29-year-old represented Glamorgan in county cricket for the majority of his career. Despite having expertise in a variety of formats, the Perth-based team has found him appealing due to his recent T20 performances.
In an official statement, Scorchers general manager Kade Harvey said, “We are incredibly excited to have Aneurin join our BBL squad this season. He showed enormous potential during his time with Trent Rockets during The Hundred and then again for England in the subsequent T20I series against Sri Lanka. I’m sure our members and fans will enjoy watching Aneurin’s aggressive style of batting on full display at ‘The Furnace’ this season.”
Donald joins a Scorchers team that head coach Adam Voges has restricted to 15 of the 18 players on the primary roster, including the maximum of three foreign players. Joel Curtis, a native of Western Australia, has also been recruited to the BBL squad, providing the team two wicketkeeping alternatives for the next season
Donald and Crawley will play with fellow English immigrant Calvin Harrison this summer. The Scorchers may field an all-England opening partnership this season since Crawley is already in the team to replace Allen at the top of the order. One of Voges’ most important choices before BBL|16 will be where Australia T20I skipper Mitch Marsh fits in a high order with so many possibilities.
