Is Naveen-ul-Haq Retiring? ACB Clarifies Afghanistan Star’s Future After Commentary Move

Naveen ul Haq, an Afghanistan cricketer, has recently been named as the commentator for the one-off Test match between Afghanistan and Bangladesh in Abu Dhabi on October 9. Shortly after the decision was announced, an official from the Afghanistan Cricket Board has clarified the position regarding the fast bowler’s career, as rumours circulate about the possible end of his professional cricketing career.

Naveen is part of the commentary panel for the Test match taking place October 9-13 at Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi, yet he is still not included in Afghanistan’s squad for that game. The board’s statement responds to speculation regarding the player’s future after his extended absence from international cricket.

ACB Chief Executive Naseeb Khan outlined why Naveen was involved in the commentary and his current role in the team’s plans. Khan stressed that the player’s recovery from injury remains the top priority, and his broadcasting duties serve a dual role during that time.

In response to speculation about the player’s future in Afghanistan after his extended absence from international cricket, Khan stated that Naveen-ul- Haq’s recovery from injury remains his top priority, and his broadcasting work is merely a temporary sideline while he cannot play.

Cricbuzz quotes Khan saying, “Naveen is currently recovering from an injury and his rehabilitation process is ongoing. His priority at this stage is to complete his rehabilitation and return to cricket fully fit. His involvement in the commentary panel should not be interpreted as a decision regarding his playing career. Naveen remains part of our plans as a player, and once he completes his rehabilitation, he will be available for the team.”

Naveen has not represented Afghanistan since his appearance in a T20 International against Zimbabwe on December 14, 2024. He was included in Afghanistan’s squad for the recently concluded T20 International series against India but did not make the playing XI. Naveen has participated in 63 white-ball matches during his international career but has yet to play a Test match.
