Zak Crawley Signs Kent Extension After Losing England Central Contract

Zak Crawley Signs Kent Extension After Losing England Central Contract

On October 15, 2026, two days after being removed from the ECB’s central contract list for the 2026–27 cycle, Zak Crawley signed a one-year contract extension with Kent. On October 13, 2026, the ECB announced 39 central contracts for 2026–2027, including two-year agreements for 11 players. Crawley was not one of the players kept. During that cycle, only he and Luke Wood lost central contracts due to poor performance.

Since making his first-team debut in 2017, Crawley—a graduate of the Kent Cricket Academy—has made over 180 appearances for his home county and amassed over 7,400 runs in various formats. He is one of just seven players in Kent’s history to score a hundred or more in all formats, having scored ten hundreds for the team.

After a challenging start to the 2026 county season, Crawley took a temporary break from red-ball cricket in the middle of the season before finding his form again. As Kent secured promotion, he concluded the season with four half-centuries in six games. Outside of county cricket, Crawley is considered a possible future club captain at Kent and captained Sunrisers Leeds in the Hundred in 2026. The decision to keep Crawley ahead of the county’s increase in competitiveness was influenced by Simon Cook, Kent’s departing director of cricket.

Cricinfo quotes Crawley saying, “I’m delighted to sign on for a further year at my boyhood county. It’s an exciting time as we head back into Division One of the County Championship and I’m looking forward to the challenge of competing for Kent this coming summer.”

After a prolonged stint at the top of the order, the 28-year-old was dropped from the Test team at the beginning of the home summer and lost his England central contract for the 2026–27 cycle. When the ECB released its list of 30 centrally contracted players this week, Crawley and Luke Wood of Lancashire were the only two players to lose their contracts due to poor performance.

In addition to offering players financial stability, the ECB’s central contract system controls their eligibility for national selection. Crawley will now only be contracted through Kent after losing that status, but he might be considered again by England if he performs well in the county. Crawley’s departure was one of the more significant choices in that cycle as it was revealed on October 13 that only he and Wood had lost contracts due to poor performance.
