In one-day internationals, Joe Root became the first hitter from England and the 34th overall to reach 8,000 runs. In his 186th ODI innings, Root achieved the milestone after batting 69 off 66 balls in Rawalpindi during England’s tri-nation series match against Sri Lanka. In addition to being his 49th ODI half-century, the knock highlighted the steadiness that has characterised his white-ball career over the course of more than ten years of playing international cricket.
When England faced Pakistan in Rawalpindi on October 20, 2026, Root started the tri-nation series with 97 runs needed to attain the milestone. He joined a select club of hitters from all countries who have surpassed the 8,000-run threshold in the 50-over format after completing the feat in the subsequent games.
In May 2025, Root made history by becoming the first English cricketer to amass 7,000 ODI runs and surpassing Eoin Morgan as the country’s top run scorer in the game. The increase from 7,000 to 8,000 has now pushed that record farther than any England batter had before.
One of England’s most reliable players in the format, Root made his ODI debut against India in Rajkot in 2013. With 2,228 and 2,570 runs in 2015 and 2016, respectively, he broke the previous record for the most runs scored by an England player in a calendar year across all formats. He was just five runs away from surpassing Michael Vaughan’s 2002 record of 1,481 Test runs for England in a single year in 2016.
For both Root and England’s batting history in the format, reaching 8,000 ODI runs is a significant milestone. Root has now surpassed all of his predecessors who have played for England in one-day internationals, since no batter has ever reached this total before.
He broke Morgan’s England record in May 2025 when he reached 7,000 ODI runs, and his rise to 8,000 has solidified his status as England’s most prolific run scorer in the 50-over game. During the historic innings, he scored his 49th ODI half-century, which is indicative of a career based on consistent contributions against a variety of opponents and situations.
