England’s veteran leg-spinner Adil Rashid has been ruled out of the one-day international series against Sri Lanka. The 38-year- old injured his right bowling hand while fielding at Old Trafford on Saturday, as England completed a 3-0 T20 series victory over the visitors.
England’s limited-overs captain, Harry Brook, confirmed that the double World Cup winner will miss the ODI series opener at Chester-le -Street on Tuesday. Following a scan on Monday, the England and Wales Cricket Board confirmed that Rashid would miss both the Thursday match at Headingley and Sunday’s game at the Oval.
Rashid will be absent from all three ODIs: the first at Banks Homes Riverside, Chester-le-Street on Tuesday, September 22; the second at Headingley on Thursday, September 24; and the final match at Kennington Oval on Sunday, September 27. Rehan Ahmed has been appointed as his replacement and has joined the England squad ahead of the first ODI.
Rashid suffered the injury during England’s third T20 international against Sri Lanka at Emirates Old Trafford, a game that sealed a 3-0 series victory for the hosts. England’s three T20 wins were by margins of 119 runs, achieved in 12.1 and 9.4 overs respectively, highlighting their supremacy in the format. The injury happened while Rashid was fielding, and a scan the next day confirmed he would miss the ODI portion of the tour.
Rashid’s absence stands out considering his prominent role in England’s ODI history. The leg-spinner ranks second on England’s all-time ODI wickets list with 243, trailing only James Anderson, who tops the chart with 269. Rashid is also a two-time World Cup winner, highlighting the experience England will be missing in the three matches against Sri Lanka.
